Diversity + Inclusion

Diversity in media creates more inclusive spaces that facilitate important conversations about how we can work together to create spaces that promote and advocate for diversity throughout the media industry. Creating spaces that promote diversity in media open the door for important conversations about how we can do better to support the communities that are underrepresented.

Starting these conversations can be difficult. Thankfully, organizations like the Center for Communication host events like their Diversity in Media Summit that specialize in creating spaces for people to have these conversations and make their voices heard. This year’s diversity in media summit focused on featuring creators and media professionals that exemplify what it means to advocate for and create inclusive spaces that celebrate diversity in media. At the Summit, media makers and companies contributed to the conversation through a series of events and panels focused on all aspects of diversity. Throughout the course of the summit, attendees spoke with media makers about how their careers were shaped by their commitment to diversity and activism in the industry.

A constant theme throughout the summit was the idea that we are finally starting to see true diversity reflected in media. Folks of different body types, genders, skin tones, backgrounds, and more are finally being celebrated in television shows, news segments, social media, and so much more. In addition to seeing more diversity on screen, we are also seeing a cultural shift take place; one that is opening doors for marginalized communities and people of color and is welcoming them into some of the most influential spaces in the media industry and beyond. We have just seen the first black woman nominated and confirmed for a seat on the US supreme court, an openly queer black woman is about to take the helm as the new White House Press Secretary, and let’s not forget about our first black, south Asian woman vice president.

Seeing more diverse communities represented in some of the most important positions in the United States has given the conversation about diversity and inclusion the attention it deserves. We are finally seeing the tireless work of activists and advocates on our social media platforms and in front-page news stories that stress the importance of fighting and advocating for equality regardless of your own personal circumstances.
