The Importance of Community Storytelling
Storytelling happens on every online platform out there. The power that stories have to create social change is exemplary of the elements of developing a strong and committed community dedicated to sharing and expanding upon learning and knowledge transfer. We regularly witness how communities around the world riseup and amplify new and systemic social justice challenges.
A story gives us the opportunity to discuss new opportunities for collaboration to create unique interpretations of a common thought. The power of engaging with community storytelling lies in the process of working together to create stories that are compelling, informative and exciting. When we come together within our communities, we become part of something bigger; something special that our contributions lift up and inspire those around us. Collaborative storytelling harnesses our love of telling stories and allows us to explore our creativity to give us ownership of our work and contributions to the power of the story that we tell. Giving each individual member the ability to contribute something personal and original educates them on the ability to tell and deliver new kinds of stories and empowers them to connect to a larger, more transformative platform. This is how cultures traditionally shared their history and lived experiences with community members throughout the generations.
Creating a diverse community of storytellers allows for greater understanding of others and the challenges they face. Equipping people with the skills to be critical and responsible media consumers and creators makes it possible for communities to stay connected.
Media Smart Citizens developed a community storytelling project and learning activity inspired by the experience of living through a global pandemic. The mission of the Tribute Media Project is to create media environments that bring people together to celebrate the individuals that make the world a better place. Doing so promotes greater understanding of others, inspires the development of media literacy skills and reminds us of the good in life. Heroes Tribute brings people together to honor the heroes among us, and Love Tribute celebrates the lives of loved ones lost.
